Fireplace Screen, Louis XV Period, Gilded Wood, France, Mid-18th Century

Gilded wooden fireplace screen. The various elements of the frame are joined using tenons. The frame is made of curved, undulating wood with profiled edges, topped in the center by a cartouche carved with plant motifs and seashells (rocaille). The edges of the frame are adorned with delicate beading and moldings. The screen rests on two pairs of widely spaced, S-shaped, profiled legs (known as “cabriole legs”), connected at the base by a decorative element. The legs are adorned with rich carvings depicting acanthus leaves and topped with inverted volutes. The front is covered with tapestry in delicate pastel shades (beiges, ochres, reds, greens, and pale pink). It features plant and floral motifs as well as geometric and patterned ribbons.

Condition visible in the photos, moderate: the wood shows cracks, signs of restoration, and loss of gilding; the tapestry on the front has slight damage, while the one on the back needs to be replaced.
