George-Henry Boughton (1833–1905)

George-Henry Boughton was an Anglo-American painter and illustrator, known for his landscapes and genre scenes inspired by American colonial history, the English countryside, and Dutch landscapes. Born in Norwich, England, he emigrated with his family to Albany, New York, while still a child.

After several stays in the United States, France, and England, Boughton settled permanently in London in 1861. There he developed a personal style, marked by the influence of French painting—particularly that of Pierre Édouard Frère—while maintaining a deep attachment to American subjects.

Alongside his historical scenes, George Henry Boughton painted numerous landscapes of England, the Netherlands, and Brittany, where he stayed on several occasions. He is distinguished by a delicate palette, harmonious muted tones, and an atmosphere imbued with poetry and melancholy. His work, often narrative in nature, reflects a pronounced taste for peaceful atmospheres and scenes of everyday life.

Elected a member of the National Academy of Design in New York in 1871, then an associate of the Royal Academy in London in 1879 before becoming a full academician in 1896, Boughton established himself as one of the leading figures in Anglo-American painting of the second half of the 19th century. He died in London in 1905, leaving behind a prolific body of work now held in numerous museums, including the New-York Historical Society, the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston, and the National Gallery of Art in Washington.
