Charles Barbant, born on July 15, 1844, in Paris, and died on May 10, 1921, also in Paris, was a French wood engraver and illustrator who ran a large studio in Paris. Between 1869 and 1882, he was best known for engraving the illustrations for some of masterpieces by Jules Verne, alongside artists such as Léon Benett, Jules Férat, Henri de Montaut, Édouard Riou, and Georges Roux. He contributed to other works, notably those published by the Mame printing house, as an engraver for drawings created by: Émile Bayard, Horace Castelli, Charles Édouard Delort, Eugène Girardet, Adrien Marie, Henri Meyer, Felician Myrbach, Achille Sirouy, Osvaldo Tofani, and others. Some of his engravings appeared in periodicals such as *Le Tour du monde* and were sometimes based on photographs.
