Marc-antoine Hervier (french, Active From 1783 To 1820) Young Beauty, Portrait Miniature

Artist: Marc-antoine Hervier
Portrait of a young noblewoman of great beauty, set against a landscape, wearing a wide red headdress adorned with white feathers (given the resemblance, this is likely a portrait of Caroline Bonaparte Murat, Napoleon’s sister). This exquisitely detailed miniature is the work of Marc-Antoine Hervier (French, active from 1783 to 1820). A student of David and Aubry, he exhibited at the Paris Salon from 1810 to 1817. A painter and miniaturist, he also worked in England for a time. Schidlof writes: “Hervier was an artist who drew well and who seems to have been influenced by Augustin.”

Provenance: Kahn–Damousset SVV auction, Paris, November 7, 2012; since then: private collection in Paris.

Inscription: signed A. Hervier, center right.

Technique: watercolor on organic paper (oval-shaped), period bronze frame.
