The end of this paddle shaft is very finely carved and displays a beautiful patina from use. To this day, the dugout canoe remains the primary means of transportation in the Sepik River Valley. As a result, these paddles are still in daily use. Some of them are very finely decorated with carvings depicting totemic animals or ancestors.
