Pierre Ambrogiani was born in Ajaccio, but his family soon decided to settle in Marseille. From then on, he spent his youth among the working-class children of the southern port city. He developed an artistic style from a very young age, showing a strong interest in drawing and sculpting. At the age of 12, he became a “junior telegraph operator” in Marseille, and the following year he exhibited his santons in a nativity scene at an annual gathering of postal workers. In 1923, when he was 16, the painter Auzias, captivated by his colorful figurines, offered him a spot on the sidelines of his exhibition at the goldsmith Langlois’s shop. Gradually, the young artist would become the pioneer of a Provençal style of painting known as “action painting,” due, among other things, to the direct expression of the medium in his works.In 1937, he took the plunge and devoted himself entirely to painting, notably participating in the Salon d’Automne, of which he became a member. He participated in numerous group exhibitions of contemporary French art, both in France and abroad, from 1948 to 1980, including in Paris, Marseille, Toulouse, New York, London, Oxford, Philadelphia, Turin, and Zurich. Over the years, the artist Pierre Ambrogianibecame a household name in France and a figure of international stature, proudly representing the South of France. His works reveal a modern Provence, where forms dissolve into color. Moving increasingly toward a simplification of form and line, the artist approaches a style of abstraction that is deliberately figurative.
