Silver-plated Bronze Living Room Lamp Featuring A Child Holding A Conch Shell, In The Neoclassical Style.

This lamp was created by repurposing an old silver-plated bronze centerpiece, made in France around 1870–1880. Its electrical wiring has been completely redone and works perfectly, allowing this beautiful 19th-century decorative sculpture to be brought back to life while giving it a new purpose.

The base features a young cupid, nude and draped only in a simple cloth, standing on a rocky outcrop rendered with beautiful naturalism. The rock is adorned with foliage, flowers, and vegetation, notably reminiscent of ivy. The child embraces a large seashell, whose deep ridges and spiral reliefs are faithfully reproduced. This shell once served as the base for a cup that is now missing; it was replaced during the restoration with a discreet electrical mount.

At the base of the composition rests a disc resembling a tambourine, reinforcing the allegorical nature of the whole. Combined with the conch shell, this iconography evokes the world of music and the arts—themes particularly favored in decorative sculpture.

This composition follows in the tradition of models developed in the 18th century, when figures of children, cupids, and genies played a prominent role in the decorative arts. The works of sculptors such as Louis-Félix de La Rue—creator of numerous groups of children for the royal workshops—as well as those of Clodion and Falconet, played a major role in popularizing this decorative repertoire. In the 19th century, bronze casters and goldsmiths readily drew inspiration from these models, reinterpreting them in the style of their time. Our piece is fully in line with this artistic tradition.

The circular base is accented with a twisted band of laurel leaves, a motif directly inherited from the Louis XVI decorative vocabulary. It rests on three console legs with Neo-Greek-inspired scrollwork, adorned with flutes, Greek frets, and cubes decorated with stylized rosettes. This ornamental repertoire, particularly popular in the 1870s, lends the piece a sober and balanced elegance.

Thanks to the quality of its casting and engraving, this piece belongs to the same artistic tradition as the centerpieces produced by the great Parisian silversmith houses of the second half of the 19th century, such as Christofle, although no specific attribution can be made in the absence of a mark or hallmark.

The silver plating shows some wear and slight signs of age, consistent with the piece’s age. The electrical assembly is new and works perfectly.
