19th Century British Romantic Mountain Landscape Watermill Scene Oil Canvas

This picturesque mountain landscape, painted, in all likelihood, by Thomas CRESWICK (1811-1869) in the mid-19th century in oil on canvas, immerses the viewer, quite literally from the first glance, into the poetic and tranquil atmosphere of the Alpine foothills. The composition is built around a picturesque mountain river and an old stone mill situated upon it. The complex colour palette, lighting and deep tones convey, with incredible mastery, the sunbeams breaking through the drifting clouds, which lends the canvas dynamism and realism. And the casual scene of a conversation between two women and a young girl walking to the river with a pitcher fills the composition with charming rustic flavour. DETAILS:
Artist: Unsigned, attributed to the renowned British artist Thomas CRESWICK (1811-1869). On the reverse of the stretcher, along the perimeter, there is a protective paper tape with the printed text "SJÖBERG BENGTSON KARLSTAD GÖTEBORG". This indicates that the painting underwent restoration at a renowned Swedish framing workshop in the second half of the 20th century.
