Late 19th Century British Romantic New Zealand Landscape Diamond Lake Oil Canvas

A solemn peace permeates this landscape, painted in oil on canvas by an unidentified British master at the end of the 19th century. The painting transports the viewer to the picturesque shores of Diamond Lake in New Zealand. As we can judge from the inscriptions on the stretcher on the reverse, the painting was commissioned from the artist by a British traveller who wanted to capture in paint a photograph taken on the shore of this lake during his journey through New Zealand. The depth of the composition is created by a classical staging of the scene: tree trunks on both sides of the foreground direct our gaze across the water's surface bathed in soft light, towards the mountain peaks dissolving in a grey-blue haze. The painter conveyed with great empathy the serenity of the landscape captured by the traveller in the photo, using a restrained, noble colour palette that delicately emphasises the pristine beauty and grandeur of this distant land. This atmospheric canvas will fill an interior space with the absolute harmony of the most beautiful places on our planet.
