Grand Bronze Trophy – 1960 Rotterdam Floriade
The obverse features a large relief composition dedicated to horticulture and abundance. Beneath a tree laden with fruit stand two allegorical figures: a seated woman holding a branch next to a basket of fruit, and a women wearing a wreath of foliage and carrying a bouquet. Flowers and various plant elements complete this scene evoking cultivation, harvest, fertility, and reward.
The Rotterdam Floriade, held from March 25 to September 25, 1960, was the first Dutch Floriade and the first international horticultural exhibition organized under the auspices of the Bureau International des Expositions. It was inaugurated by Princess Beatrix and welcomed approximately four million visitors.
The Dutch National Photo Archives document, among other things, the official Floriade awards ceremony held at Rotterdam City Hall on January 20, 1961. However, the specific recipient of our trophy has yet to be identified.
With its monumental dimensions, sculpted decoration on both sides, and marble base, this piece stands out distinctly from the small commemorative medals typically issued for the event. It serves both as a historical record of the first Floriade and as a beautiful decorative object representative of official European sculpture from the 1960s.
