Pair of candlesticks or torches
Gilded bronze (8 pieces)
Dimensions: H. 27 (cm.)
Paris, circa 1810

Pair of torches or candlesticks, resting on a two-tiered base finely chased with guilloché patterns and friezes. The shaft is cylindrical and the bowl flared. Very fine chiseling and high-quality craftsmanship across all 8 pieces characterize this understated design.

A prestigious model.
These candlesticks may have been crafted by Thomire. The model is indeed listed in various apartments of the Palace of Fontainebleau and reproduced under numbers 165 and 166 in “Clocks and Bronze Furnishings Brought to Fontainebleau During the First Empire.”

Thomire-Duterme & Cie: They formed a partnership in 1804 by taking over the assets of the firm Daguerre and Lignereux. Operating under the name Thomire, Duterme, and Co., they became the leading suppliers of gilded bronze, employing as many as seven hundred workers. Thomire then experienced significant growth. He was the first bronze artist to participate in the 1806 Industrial Products Exhibition, at which he received a gold medal.

Condition report: signs of wear and minor dents. Later bobeches.
