Painting By François Gall

The artist François Gall is originally from the Kingdom of Hungary, in present-day Romania, where he was born under the name Ferenc Erdelyi Gáll in 1912. The young François studied art under the painter Aurel Popp before enrolling at the Accademia di San Luca in Rome in Umberto Coromaldi’s studio. He then enrolled at the Collegium Germanicum et Hungaricum, and his scholarship allowed him to travel throughout Europe.

After his first two exhibitions in Rome and Hungary, François Gall arrived in Paris in 1936. He fell in love with the French capital, where he studied at the École des Beaux-Arts and met numerous artists, including Pablo Picasso and André Derain. The bustling atmosphere of the parks, gardens, the banks of the Seine, and the grandboulevards served as a major source of inspiration for his work.
