A finely carved boxwood netsuke depicting an iconic figure from Japanese folklore and mythology, recognizable by his distinctive hat. (one of the 7gods of happiness).
The figure is depicted standing, with hat of a sage, clad in a loose-fitting robe with deeply pleated folds, holding a staff in a serene pose and smiling broadly.
It features beautiful modeling of face with a striking smile, as well as the drapery, all finished in a warm, antique patina, reflecting a long history of use, in its original, untouched but worn condition.
On back, the “himotoshi” are widely pierced; there is an old scar on holes through which the cord passes, sign of long-term use. 8.5 cm x 4 cm.
