Officer’s saber from the 8th Infantry Regiment, Directoire/Consulate period, 18th century.
Checkered wooden grip and German-style brass mountings.
Single-pronged guard with a central medallion featuring a figure’s head.
The pommel of a long-tailed hussar saber is chiseled with a garland of leaves and line work, with a riveted button.
The guard arm is at a right angle, and the crossguard features a horizontal beaded panel depicting 1 shield, 1 saber, and 1 musket, as well as the number 8.
Curved blade with a flat back and hollow edges, engraved one-third of the way up and signed at the heel with a cluster of grapes and the monogram “N & K.”
Black leather scabbard with two cut-out brass fittings, decorated with line engraving.
A chip on the pommel and damage at the junction of the leather and the butt cap (fastening missing)
Length: 86.5 cm
Length without scabbard: 83.5 cm
Blade length: 70 cm
Blade width at the heel: 3 cm
