Our painting appears to be a variation or a study for another portrait titled *Les Lilas*, 1880, held at the Galleria d’Arte Moderna (Florence).
A painter of allegorical scenes, genre scenes, figures, and portraits, “this charming artist, who painted young women with as much grace and greater truth than François Boucher, was the son of an Englishman, married to a Frenchwoman. " (Benezit, Gründ, 1999, p. 479) sic
He was a student of Martin Drolling; he was unable to win the Prix de Rome because he was a foreigner, but he exhibited at the Salon for several years, notably in 1851 and 1865.
