Alain Thomas, born on February 14, 1942, in Nantes, is a self-taught French painter, unanimously recognized as the leading figure in naïve-primitive painting.He began painting at the age of 12, encouraged by his grandmother, who gave him his first art supplies. His first exhibition took place in Nantes in 1963, when he was just 20 years old. After working as a confectioner and chocolatier, he devoted himself entirely to painting beginning in 1968.His early influences (Hieronymus Bosch, Brueghel the Elder, and Picasso’s Blue and Rose periods) quickly evolved into a highly recognizable personal style: figures with melancholic, indistinct faces set against uniform backgrounds, which gradually gave way, starting in the late 1960s, to more open compositions rich in landscapes, birds, flowers, and fantastical animals.
Based in Vertou since 1987, Alain Thomas paints poetic scenes in oil, celebrating nature, the seasons, fairy tales, and the animal kingdom.
He is particularly known for his toucans with keeled beaks (more than 113 specimens painted since 1995, in partnership with the LPO and the WWF).A prolific illustrator (with some twenty books to his credit), he has also created monumental murals, sound-and-light shows (notably for Nantes Cathedral), and numerous public artworks.
A Knight of the National Order of Merit (2019), his work is exhibited in numerous galleries and institutions in France and internationally.
His son Wilhem now promotes his work through the Galerie L’Oiseau Bleu and numerous exhibitions.At over 80 years old, Alain Thomas continues to create with the same passion, the same freshness, and the same love of color, enchanting audiences with his dreamlike and deeply human world.
