"The 'breverl' is a folded-paper amulet containing sacred images, prayers, andsmall objects intended to protect against illness, natural disasters, orthe devil. Worn around the neck, placed in a newborn’s cradle, or behind abeam in the house inside a precious case, it takes its name from the Latin ‘breve.’Somewhere between religious belief and magic, the breverl was widespread from the 18thto the early 20th century in the southern part of the Germanic-speaking world."

Crafted from finely openwork pewter cast in a mold, its folding frame encloses two horn plates imitating tortoiseshell.
Very beautiful front featuring a crowned cross and a large religious monogram.
Plain back, on which a pilgrimage image could be inserted. Not opened; I do not know if the “protection slip” is still present.
