Apollo With Lyre And Laurel Wreath. Shell Cameo, Italy, Mid - 19th Century
Apollo with Lyre and Laurel Wreath. Shell Cameo, Italy, 19th Century
Finely hand-carved shell cameo, representative of the finest Italian glyptic production of the 19th century, probably executed in Rome or Naples. It depicts a Greek deity in profile, most likely Apollo, accompanied by his lyre and laurel wreath, following a classically inspired iconography derived from ancient sculpture. The exceptional quality of the carving is evident in the refined treatment of the facial features, the flowing locks of hair, and the delicately modelled drapery. Retaining its original 19th-century gilt metal mount, it can be worn either as a brooch or as a pendant.
Dimensions: 4.5 × 6 cm.
