A 19th-century Russian Orthodox icon, “Our Lady of Kazan,” depicting the Virgin Mary with the Infant Jesus. The simple, compact composition of the figures is characteristic of one of the most revered Russian Orthodox iconographic types. The painting is covered with raised silver ochre, highlighting the folds of the garments, the ornaments, and the contours of the holy figures. The golden rays around the halos lend the composition a special solemnity. The visible parts of the painting have retained the dark color palette that has developed over time.
