Antique Chirvan Rug From Azerbaijan, Circa 1890

Fully hand-knotted rug, pure wool, plant-based dyes, measuring 147 cm x 110 cm

Antique Shirvan rugs originate from the region of the same name in the Eastern Caucasus and are renowned for their fine weave, high knot density, and clean, straight geometric designs. The design philosophy of the hand-knotted Russian Shirvan rug emphasizes a densely populated field, often organized around a vertical axis of three medallions, as seen in this piece. Woven with short, dense wool on a cotton foundation, they are always made using the symmetrical knot. The resulting aesthetic is a balance of intricate details with a harmonious color palette derived from vegetable or mineral dyes, dominated by madder red, indigo blue, and ivory white.
