Silver Carving Set, Also Known As A Game Carving Set, By Pierre Bezon

Elegant silver-mounted carving set, also known as a game carving set, comprising a carving knife and matching fork. The handles are silver-filled, fitted with a chromium-plated steel blade and fork.

The handles are finely decorated in the Louis XVI style with fluting, asparagus-tip motifs, acanthus leaves and delicately chased laurel swags.

The set is preserved in its original fitted case, covered in paper and lined with yellow satin and velvet.

• French Minerve hallmark, 2nd standard (800/1000 silver).
• Maker's mark: PB with a cogwheel for Pierre BEZON (partially struck).

• Knife: Length: 30.4 cm (11.97 in.) – Width: 2.9 cm (1.14 in.)
• Fork: Length: 26.5 cm (10.43 in.) – Width: 2.3 cm (0.91 in.)

Total gross weight: 183 g (6.46 oz.)

Light wear consistent with age and use. Very well preserved overall. The chromium-plated blade retains an excellent lustre.

Pierre Bezon registered his maker's mark on 25 April 1913. He worked successively at 13 rue Portefoin and later 72 rue des Archives, both in Paris's 3rd arrondissement. The date on which his mark was cancelled is not known.

His production was devoted primarily to table silver and serving accessories, reflecting the enduring popularity of the Louis XVI style in Parisian silverwork during the first half of the twentieth century.
