André Hunebelle, Saturn-shaped Vase Made Of Opalescent Glass, Art Deco Period
A very rare opalescent glass vase, pressed and molded by André Hunebelle, “Saturn” model
. Spherical in shape, this vase—with its design appearing to move around an axis—perfectly illustrates a planet rotating on its axis. Bands of polygons with protruding edges collide and interlock in a semblance of perfectly controlled chaos, perfectly illustrating what André Hunebelle meant when he spoke of his art: “We work directly with the material, with the mass itself, in the manner of a sculptor who carves directly from a block of marble” (Quotidien Paris Soir—December 26, 1929).The opalescence of the glasswork, at times very luminous and bordering on opacity in certain places, accentuates the impression of movement through an imperceptible, quivering, diaphanous veil.
