Louis Cabié, a renowned artist in France—and particularly in the Bordeaux region—even during his lifetime, traveled throughout the greater southwest throughout his life. A student of Harpignies, whose passion for vegetation in the style of the Barbizon School is evident in his work, he continued to capture the simplicity of picturesque French landscapes until his death. Spectacular trees, forest atmospheres, places steeped in history, enchanting valleys, or even a landscape in its most unadorned state—he knew how to bring out its vital contrast.
Hérisson is an iconic location in Louis Cabié’s career. He visited it with his mentor Henri Harpignies, who lived nearby, and painted the medieval village and its towers from various vantage points offered by the topography. Sometimes he painted the river alone at the Saut du Loup, sometimes from a low angle at the foot of the village, sometimes from the heights overlooking the heather-covered hills, or from a vantage point within the towers themselves. Cabié sought out light and its reflections, and found them in this charming place. It was around the year 1899 that he produced the greatest number of works depicting the banks of the Aumance. Did he come to visit Harpignies for a longer stay? The previous year, Cabié received the Legion of Honor, and his sponsor was none other than his teacher… Perhaps this was a reason—a kind of camaraderie between teacher and student, now that the latter had been honored?
