Powder Flask Made Of Cow Horn From Southern Germany

This type of powder flask was used in a military context, particularly by musketmen and arquebusiers. The horn was softened in boiling water, pressed into a flattened shape, and then fitted with iron fittings, including a spout, a spring mechanism, and a belt hook. Produced in large quantities, mainly in Nuremberg and other cities in southern Germany, this powder flask was widely used as a military weapon during the Eighty Years’ War in the Netherlands, as well as in other conflicts in northwestern Europe during the same period, from approximately 1580 to 1620.

The pear-shaped flask is engraved with a central medallion depicting a fleur-de-lis and dated 1607. This medallion is framed by radiating sun motifs and a decorative border. The sides are engraved with a cable pattern, while the reverse is adorned with rings and the letter “H,” likely referring to the first owner.

The pear-shaped piece is in good condition. There are small cracks in the horn beneath the metal fittings, likely caused over time by pressure from the screws, but these do not affect its appearance or functionality. Overall, this is a well-preserved and functional specimen that retains its belt hook and features an attractive period patina.
