Five-drawer Tall Chest Stamped J. Schmitz

An attractive tall chest featuring amaranth veneer and kingwood parquetry, opening with five drawers.

The uprights are canted. The shaped apron rests on cabriole legs fitted with gilt-bronze sabots at the front.

It is topped with a *Rouge Royal* marble slab featuring a *bec de corbin* (bird's beak) molding; the marble has been repaired in the past.

The drawer interiors—featuring rabbeted joints—and the drawer bottoms are constructed of oak.

The gilt-bronze mounts are original.

This small piece, suitable for a bedroom or living room, bears the stamp of J. Schmitz—Joseph Schmitz, a Parisian cabinetmaker admitted as a Master on June 18, 1761. His furniture is renowned for its excellent craftsmanship. Almost all his pieces date from the Louis XV period.
