History
A Russian painter trained at the Imperial Academy of Fine Arts in Saint Petersburg, Ivan Savinov was appointed an academician in 1859. His rare body of work is known primarily through a few identified portraits, notably the “Portrait of the Treasurer of the Academy of Fine Arts, Mr. Obraztsov” (1859), as well as studies from life executed in the 1850s. Having remained on the sidelines of the major artistic movements of the late 19th century, he belongs to that generation of academic artistswhich is now under represented, whose works appear very rarely on the market.
