Jwr Glazed Stoneware Jug In The Renaissance Style
Artist: Johan Wilhem Remy (1833-18911)
A blue-gray glazed stoneware jug in the Renaissance style, featuring a frieze around the body depicting a series of figures—presumably the apostles—and medallions with portraits of men and women in Renaissance attire (Grand Electors?)
On the base, the JWR stamp, the number “187,” and the capacity: 1/2 L
This number, 187, attests to the model’s age—certainly the 1870s—since, numbers above 700 date from the 20th century.
This jug is in the Renaissance or historicist style, a trend that developed in Germany under Wilhelm II.
Johan Wilhem Rémy was born in 1833 in Hohn, now in Rhineland-Palatinate, and died in 1911, leaving his factory to his sons.
Note: there is a small chip on the hat of one of the men in the upper frieze.
