Nicolas Mignard's Workshop: "the Penance Of Saint Francis"
Artist: Nicolas Mignard Atelier De
From the studio of Nicolas Mignard. Oil on canvas, "The Penance of Saint Francis," unsigned. 63.5 × 50.3 cm. 17th-century French school.
Nicolas Mignard (1606–1668), known as Mignard d’Avignon, became the official court portraitist after being admitted to the Royal Academy of Painting and Sculpture in Paris.
When a religious composition appealed to a patron or a religious community, the studio was commissioned to produce variations or replicas of it.
The master would conceive the original design (l'invenzione), often painting the faces or complex details while the assistants executed the backgrounds, landscapes, or secondary drapery.
Mignard d’Avignon’s two sons, Paul and Pierre II, were trained in their father’s studio.
Our painting is a perfect example of Nicolas Mignard’s art, in which the light—typical of the Avignon master’s style—precisely illuminates the face and hands of the principal saint, as well as the pages of the book.
Through a soft chiaroscuro , the spiritual and dramatic dimension of the scene is brilliantly accentuated.
Unframed. There is a small loss of paint on the table below the hourglass and toward the bottom of the painting on the monk’s habit. Good overall condition.
2,500 euros.
