A Gioan – Mediterranean Rural Scenes - Pair Of Oil Paintings On Cardboard – Signed
Artist: Gioan Ambroise Fortuné (1851 – 1926, France)
A. Gioan, likely Ambroise Fortuné Gioan (Nice, 1851 – Menton, 1926)
Pair of oil paintings on cardboard, Mediterranean rural scenes
Pair of small oil paintings on cardboard depicting two scenes of a Mediterranean garden. The first shows a lemon tree in bloom and bearing fruit, surrounded by a lush garden beneath a blue sky dotted with clouds. The second depicts a field of poppies at the foot of an olive tree, bordered by a light-colored stone wall, bathed in the same Mediterranean light. In the upper left corner of this second composition, a branch from the same lemon tree can be seen: the two paintings were indeed painted in the same garden, just a few steps apart.
Each painting is signed “A. Gioan” in the lower left corner.
Dimensions (identical for both): 27 x 22 cm; 32 x 27 cm with frame.
Condition
Paintings in very good condition. Original carved gilded wood frames, in fair condition; they could benefit from being tightened at the corners.
The Artist
These works may have been created by Ambroise Fortuné Gioan (Nice, 1851 – Menton, 1926), a painter who signed his works “À. Gioan” and whose career unfolded in Menton: he taught drawing at the town’s middle school starting in 1884, then was appointed curator of the Menton Museum of Fine Arts in 1909. He painted views of the French Riviera, particularly around Menton, a city famous for its lemon trees—a connection that seems to be confirmed by the lemon tree depicted in both paintings.
