John Lewis BROWN (1829–1890) Attributed to,
SKETCHBOOK
12.5 x 20 cm
(loose sheets)
Sketchbook, bound in cardboard, with a worn elastic band and a pencil holder, comprising thirty-eight sheets, thirty-two of which contain drawings or annotations.
It contains ink and graphite sketches of landscapes – notably of Scotland and Egypt, the latter enhanced with watercolour – as well as seascapes, portraits of a man and a cat, and architectural sketches.
The monogram ‘LB’ appears several times throughout the sketchbook.
The label from the art supplies shop where the sketchbook was purchased – Louis Latouche, located at 34 Rue La Fayette, Paris – suggests a date between 1865 and 1887.
Bibliography: Several graphite sketches are known to be held in the Department of Graphic Arts at the Louvre Museum, Paris.
