18th-century Wedding Chest From India (kerala)
A wooden box from Portia (teak) used to hold the bride’s jewelry; it echoes the pyramidal shape of the houses in the province of Kerala on the Malabar Coast in southwestern India. The ornamentation consists of wrought iron in a flamed and crescent-moon pattern; this box features a hasp lock (without a key) and retains its original polychrome finish.
