Copernican Armillary Sphere From The Late 18th To Early 19th Century

Copernican Armillary Sphere

An armillary sphere based on Copernicus’s heliocentric system.

Made of cardboard and printed paper, it is mounted on a baluster-shaped walnut shaft and represents a movable planetary system.
The six movable armillae revolve around the central sphere. Like a geocentric armillary sphere—and unlike a Ptolemaic one—the central sphere represents the sun.

The armillae thus represent the planets Saturn, Jupiter, Mars, Earth, Venus, and Mercury, respectively, and each is labeled with information about its orbital speed.
