Mid-19th Century Louis-philippe Chest Of Drawers In Walnut Burl

Mid-19th Century Louis-Philippe Chest of Drawers in Walnut Burl – Loire Valley, France

This elegant Louis-Philippe chest of drawers, crafted in the mid-19th century, is a remarkable example of the craftsmanship of the cabinetmakers of France’s Loire Valley. Veneered in spectacular walnut burl, it is distinguished by its harmonious proportions, exceptional materials, and the striking beauty of its natural grain.

The front displays a magnificent, symmetrical walnut burl veneer whose rich figuring creates a lively and unique decorative effect. The sides are also veneered in walnut burl, reflecting the care and attention devoted to every visible surface of the piece.

The chest features four drawers, including a discreet upper drawer seamlessly integrated into the top rail of the case. Known in French cabinetry as a “tiroir à doucine,” this refined design element enhances the balance of the proportions while illustrating the sophistication of mid-19th-century cabinetmaking. This subtle arrangement visually lightens the façade and reinforces the elegant lines characteristic of the Louis-Philippe period.

All drawers are assembled using traditional hand-cut dovetail joints, demonstrating the high quality of their original construction. A single original key operates all the locks smoothly.

The chest stands on elegant bracket (“pistol”) feet, typical of the Louis-Philippe period, and is surmounted by its original gray Sainte-Anne marble top, beautifully shaped with rounded front corners. The edge of the marble is finished with a generous molded profile, traditionally known among French cabinetmakers as a paire de fesses, lending softness and elegance to the overall silhouette.

The original wooden escutcheons remain in place, reflecting the understated refinement characteristic of the period.

This chest of drawers is presented in remarkable original condition. It has never undergone restoration, preserving its authenticity and historical integrity. It has only received careful maintenance, including gentle cleaning and the application of traditional French wax to protect the wood while enhancing the warmth and depth of the walnut veneer.

According to family tradition, this chest has been passed down from generation to generation within the same Loire Valley family. It originally stood in the master bedroom of an elegant Loire Valley residence, where it remained for well over a century. Each successive generation took great care to preserve it, allowing this beautiful piece to reach us today in an exceptionally authentic state.

With its timeless elegance, outstanding walnut burl veneer, and distinguished provenance, this Louis-Philippe chest of drawers will complement both a traditional interior and a contemporary setting, where it will bring warmth, character, and a sense of French heritage.
