Mahout's spear, known as an ankus - India, circa 1900

A spear/hook used by the mahout to guide his elephant. 

This spear consists of three parts that can be screwed together and apart.

The steel handle.
The spear/hook, etched on both sides.
The brass pommel, depicting a mythical creature, which, when unscrewed, reveals a quadrangular-sectioned tusk.
