Artist: Manufacture D'aubusson

An exceptional 19th-century Aubusson tapestry, this monumental work illustrates the timeless theme of the Seven Deadly Sins with great iconographic richness. A true allegorical scene, it features a multitude of characters, symbolic animals, and fantastical creatures, each representing the failings of human nature.

At the center of the composition, a richly dressed nobleman embodies Pride, surrounded by a majestic peacock, a traditional symbol of vanity. On the left, the diner seated at the table, surrounded by food and wine, evokes Gluttony, while the figure holding a goblet symbolizes the excesses of earthly pleasures. Below, a man rushing toward wealth embodies Greed, consumed by his desire to possess. On the right, a fighting rooster and a turbulent scene symbolize Wrath, while demonic creatures, disturbing apparitions, and ghostly figures illustrate the temptations and consequences of the vices. The figure lying in the foreground, meanwhile, evokes Sloth, in a posture of abandonment and carelessness.

The entire scene is constructed as a veritable moral lesson, where every detail invites the viewer to discover allusions to the seven deadly sinsPride, Greed, Lust, Envy, Gluttony, Wrath, and Sloth. The rich composition, harmonious colors, and fine weaving attest to the remarkable craftsmanship of the Aubusson workshops.

With its generous dimensions (220 × 170 cm), this tapestry is a prestigious piece, ideal for adorning a spacious living room, a library, a historic home, or to enrich a collection of antique tapestries.
