Felice Rubbiani (Modena 1677 - San Pancrazio di Freto 1752)
Still Life with Flowers, Fruit and a Bird - Still Life with a Plate, Flowers and Fruit
Oil on canvas
99 x 72 cm
Felice Rubbiani was a student of Domenico Bettini, from whom he hoped to inherit the workshop; however, it instead passed to Angelo Michele Cittadini, the son of Pier Francesco. This turn of events caused a rift between the two, leading Rubbiani to leave Bologna. Upon returning to his native Modena, it appears he served at the local court. He certainly enjoyed the favor of the nobility and the city’s wealthy bourgeoisie, who commissioned several works from him, as evidenced by inventories from that period. Rubbiani collaborated with Francesco Vellani, both on still lifes and on the creation of religious works for local churches.
