Bernard Dunand And The Jean Dunand Workshops, Lacquer And Iron Side Table, Art Deco Style, Circa 1950
Artist: Bernard Dunand (1908-1998) Et Atelier Jean Dunand (1877-1942)
A circular side table resting on a wrought-iron base with a lacquered top. Lacquer work by Bernard Dunand featuring a stylized foliage design in beautiful shades of red, yellow, brown, and black.
This side table dates to around 1950, a time when Bernard Dunand—son of the famous Jean Dunand—had taken over his father’s workshops following his father’s death in 1942, in order to continue creating luxurious works in lacquer and brasswork. Initially a simple craftsman in the family business, it was upon his father’s death that he took the reins of the company and fulfilled prestigious commissions around the world, such as
- The Chamber of Commerce of the City of Le Havre
- The grand dining room of the Bristol Hotel in Beirut
- The private residence of King Saud of Saudi Arabia in Bern
- the first-class lounge of the ocean liner Ancerville
Throughout the 1930s, 1940s, and 1950s, Bernard Dunand continued to collaborate with his father’s artisans in the same workshops, and had learned from them, which explains the high level of craftsmanship in the son’s works and also accounts for the stylistic continuity of “Dunand” pieces, infused with a touch of modernity.
We are aware of several tables created by Bernard Dunand between 1932 and the 1950s. We can find on the book of Felix Marcilhac "Jean Dunand" à similar design page 334.
The table is in very good condition, with a few slight surface scratches from normal use.
