Firangi-style Saber With A Khanda Hilt, India, 17th Century
Firangi-style saber with a khanda-style hilt
India, 17th century
Features a long, slightly curved European Damascus steel blade with a
central fuller, and a khanda-style steel hilt extended by
a basket-hilt guard decorated with engraved motifs.
This type of weapon, combining an antique European blade with an
Indian mount, is emblematic of the exchanges between
the West and India in the 17th–18th centuries.
Portuguese,
Italian, or German blades were imported via Goa and then
locally mounted onto Indian hilts, as seen here.
