Daum - Pair Of Crystal Lamps, “lynx” Model, By Jean-pierre Demarchi For Daum, France, 1973

Pair of rectangular-based lamps made of solid crystal, the “Lynx” model, created in 1973 by sculptor Jean-Pierre Demarchi, then artistic director of the Daum crystal factory. The crystal, hollowed out into a biomorphic shape with symmetrical volutes, is accented by a white opal crystal column on one of the two bases and a brown crystal sconce on the other—a variation in hue that distinguishes each piece without disrupting the unity of the pair. 

The interplay between the transparency of the crystal and the matte finish of the central inlay captures the light with a striking sculptural presence, true to Demarchi’s approach, who regarded crystal as a material in its own right, on par with bronze or stone.

The strength of this pair lies in its bold contrast of color and texture.
