Artist: Ecole Flamand 17-18ème Siècle
Flemish painter, 17th–18th century
The Construction of the Tower of Babel
Oil on canvas
51 x 64 cm.
Framed: 66 x 78 cm
If there is a subject in art that has been revisited time and again throughout the ages, each time with a fresh and original vision closely tied to the artist’s individual sensibility, the Tower of Babel perfectly embodies these qualities. And our work, created by a Flemish painter active between the 17th and 18th centuries, is a rare and valuable example of this.
An ancient subject, a myth and metaphor that remains ever relevant, which in art has always had the power to transport the viewer to another world, sparking curiosity and fascination.
One cannot fail to mention Bruegel the Elder’s famous Tower of Babel, which represents the perfect example of these sensations, and, more generally, the many other works that the greatest Flemish painters chose to create in honor of this theme, showcasing incredible painterly and inventive qualities.
Although a product of the artist’s imagination, we should remember that the story of the Tower of Babel is one of the most fascinating and enigmatic in the Bible, mentioned in the Book of Genesis (11:1–9[1]), where it is recounted that mankind decided to build a city and a tower whose summit would reach Heaven.
But God, seeing mankind’s excessive ambition and unity—as they ruled the earth in peaceful harmony and spoke a single language— decided to sow confusion and prevented the structure from being completed, confusing their languages so that they could no longer understand one another and leading to the dispersion of the peoples.
In the lower left corner is the Babylonian king Nebuchadnezzar II, a symbol of hubris, followed by a group of courtiers and soldiers and depicted as the architect shows him his work, while the workers look on in astonishment.
In the background, the focal point of the canvas, the imposing structure along the banks of the Euphrates River stands out, consisting of a complex design that incorporates multiple architectural styles eclectically layered together, drawing from the Italian Renaissance tradition with the addition of elements from a decidedly more medieval and Northern European tradition.
Observing the details, we can lose ourselves in admiring the builders’ fervent activity, with the small figures bustling up and down the ramps to complete the majestic work as quickly as possible.
