Important Pair Of Polychrome Emailed Fô Dogs, China, 20th Century
An imposing pair of Fô dogs made of earthenware with rich polychrome decoration, a 20th-century Chinese piece.
True guardian deities in Chinese tradition, the Fô dogs, or Buddhist lions, have for centuries been symbols of power, prosperity, and the protection of homes. This large pair immediately captivates with its spectacular appearance and the quality of its decoration.
The animals are depicted in a vigilant pose, their mouths wide open to reveal their fangs, and their eyes in relief expressing their full vigor. Their bodies are animated by powerful, stylized scrollwork and adorned with flowers and plant motifs in high relief. Their long tails unfurl into an elegant foliage design that further accentuates the richness of the composition.
The entire piece is covered in a superb glossy glaze dominated by shades of green, enhanced with cobalt blue, brown, red, and white, in the spirit of famous Chinese enamels. This vibrant palette perfectly highlights the numerous details of the modeling.
This impressive pair makes for a remarkable decorative piece, whether in a classical home, a contemporary interior, or a cabinet of curiosities. Their presence is particularly striking thanks to their generous dimensions and substantial weight.
The set is in good condition. There are only a few very slight chips and minor wear marks, which are barely visible and do not affect the overall presentation.
A very beautiful pair of Fô dogs, decorative and expressive, ideal for lovers of Asian art and collectors of Chinese ceramics.
