MIGUEL TUSQUELLAS CORBELLA (1884–1969)
Oil on canvas mounted on cardboard

54 x 46 with frame

This work is a fine example of Miguel Tusquellas Corbella’s mature period. Here, the painter reveals his full talent for capturing the light and theatmosphere of Mediterranean landscapes through a loose brushstroke reminiscent of Post-Impressionism. The composition guides the eye along a path toward a terraced garden opening onto a rolling landscape, likely located in Catalonia, near Barcelona or the Costa Brava.
The harmonious blend of greens, blues, and pinks creates a peaceful and luminous atmosphere. Painted on canvas mounted on cardboard—a technique frequently used for plein air painting—this work perfectly illustrates the artist’s landscape oeuvre and stands as a refined example of Catalan painting from the first half of the 20th century.
Miguel Tusquellas Corbella (1884–1969) was a Catalan painter, known for his connections to major figures in modern art. Born in Barcelona, he studied at the School of Fine Arts in his hometown, where he won a silver medal in drawing. A scholarship enabled him to travel through Spain’s major cities, influencing his style, which blended Spanish Baroque and modernity.
In 1906, Tusquellas moved to Paris at the invitation of his friend, the famous painter Juan Gris. There, he developed his art at the heart of the Parisian avant-garde, forging connections with Pablo Picasso and other leading figures of the time. His career was marked by regular participation in the Salon des Indépendants, where his work attracted particular attention.
Several of Tusquellas’s works are held in private collections, and some are reminiscent of Picasso’s early period in terms of their style and their roots in the Catalan tradition. He spent his final years in France, where he obtained citizenship in 1933 and eventually settled in Élincourt-Sainte-Marguerite, in the Oise department.
His work, exhibited in various galleries and art fairs in France and Spain, attests to his role in cultural exchanges between these two countries.
