Great Bronze Wax Seal : God Priapus And A Naked Woman, Curiosa, France, 19th Century
A very beautiful bronze seal or wax stamp. It depicts a sculpted bust of the god Priapus on a pedestal, with a nude woman wrapped around him. The god Priapus is the god of male procreative power, gardens, and vineyards; here he is depicted as a bust and thus without his usual giant phallus, his face mischievous, a smile playing on his lips. On the other sides of the seal, one can see his symbols: a vine and a pan flute. The seal is engraved with a monogram, probably M.D.
A beautiful antique piece, made of high-quality bronze; it is quite heavy and feels well in the hand.
Excellent condition, no break or flaw , some minor wear on the patina, nothing serious.
European working, probably French, dating from the first half of the 19th century, circa 1830–1850.
Dimensions: 10 cm x 3.8 cm at its widest point.
