Chest Ornament, Mendi People, Papua New Guinea
A pectoral ornament made from a piece of "melo-melo" shell. The upper part is decorated with a frieze featuring a triangular pattern. Along the edge of the upper section, there are also holes used to thread strands that support a cord made of braided plant fibers.
This ornament was worn by dignitaries during ceremonies.
