Small 18th-century German Art Cabinet
Small decorative cabinet with architectural marquetry, 18th century
Small mahogany-veneered table cabinet with nine drawers and a central door, topped by a pyramidal finial added at a later date. The drawer fronts are adorned with fine light-wood marquetry, likely maple or pear wood, depicting stylized urban scenes: gateways, arcades, towers, and palm trees.
This type of architectural marquetry is sometimes associated with the cabinetmaking tradition of southern Germany or Tyrol in the 17th and 18th centuries, and more specifically with a series of small devotional cabinets depicting the architecture of the Holy Land.
The interior bears the hallmarks of 18th-century craftsmanship. The top and perhaps the sides and back were added later and likely date from the 19th century.
