Nude With Drapery - Bronze, Circa 1930 - By Kozuke Fuji 1882–1958 #498
The artist:
Member of the Japan Art Academy. Son of a woodcarver. He first studied drawing and then graduated from the sculpture department of the Tokyo School of Fine Arts in 1907. By 1909, he was already achieving success at the Salons.
He primarily created female nudes, as well as a few animal subjects. He exhibited at the Arts Pavilion during the 1932 Los Angeles Olympic Games. He was the first Japanese sculptor to hold solo exhibitions at a gallery (1914–1920) in Tokyo’s Ginza district. Postcards attest to the diversity of the works presented by the artist. He never participated in nationalist competitions extolling patriotic and military values, devoting himself primarily to the nude.
