19th-century Snuffbox Made Of Corozo, Featuring A Musician, Flowers, A Grotesque Head, A Sailor, And A Convict
Snuffbox made of finely carved corozo*, shaped like a ship with a grotesque head at one end, surrounded by broad garlands of foliage and flowers, as well as palmettes below, decorated with a female musician on top; crafted by a sailor or convict, dating from the 19th century.
This snuffbox is in good overall condition and of fine quality.
Please note: a small chip and a missing piece on the woman’s hand and instrument, a crack on one side (see red arrow), the lid slides on and off without a hinge (original), signs of age; see photos.

*Coconut, like corozo, was worked by sailors or even by convicts. The latter worked it to pass the time but also, and above all, to earn a little money to improve their daily lives. They may also have been made by sailors during their long voyages. These coconut or corozo objects are beautifulexamples of folk art.
