Corozo Snuffbox: Hunter, Horseman, Rifleman, Horse, Sailor, Convict—19th Century
Snuffbox made of finely carved corozo*, decorated with a hunter on horseback holding his rifle, marked "chasseur" on the bottom, surrounded by garlands of flowers and fruit; crafted by a sailor or convict, dating from the 19th century.
This snuffbox is in good overall condition, in its original state.
Please note: a small chip and missing section on the horse’s front leg, a small chip on one side of the snuffbox (a leaf-patterned scroll), the hinge is slightly worn and oxidized (but it closes), tiny cracks and signs of age; see photos.
We offer a large selection of corozo snuffboxes for sale on this site.

*Coconut, just like corozo, was worked by sailors oreven by convicts. The latter worked with it to pass the time but also, and above all, to earn a little money to improve their daily lives. They may also have been made by sailors during their long voyages. These coconut or corozo objects are beautifulexamples of folk art.
