Carved Malachite Group - China, 20th Century
A significant malachite sculpture, finely carved in high relief and entirely openwork, requiring extreme dexterity. It likely dates from the 20th century (Republican period), and the raw material probably came from deposits in the Republic of the Congo (Katanga) or Siberia. A linear inscription on the piece (Chun Feng De Yi) translates to “Riding the Spring Breeze of Success,” signifying the height of happiness. The stamp, the signature of the workshop or artisan, attests to the piece’s quality. The design features three female figures, Guanyins; the central figure holds a scroll of calligraphy, while the one in the middle holds a Ruyi scepter. At the base, a young attendant looks up at them. The design also includes trees with branches laden with magnolia or peony blossoms.
