Antique Chinese Hardwood Opium Pipe With Silver Saddle, Ivory Mounts & Sealed Bowl, C19th

A fine antique Chinese opium pipe dating to the late Qing Dynasty, circa 1870–1900.

The pipe is made from a dark polished hardwood and is fitted with finely engraved silver mounts decorated with elegant scrolling floral motifs. The original octagonal ceramic opium bowl retains its metal collar and bears an impressed maker's seal to one side, adding authenticity and interest. The removable bowl remains in good condition and fits securely into the silver saddle.

Both ends of the pipe are mounted with turned ivory fittings displaying the attractive concentric grain and natural age patina expected of genuine nineteenth-century ivory. Fine age cracks are present, entirely consistent with the age of the piece.

This is a well-made example intended for the Chinese domestic market rather than a later export souvenir. The quality of the engraved silver saddle, original ceramic bowl and hardwood stem combine to make it an attractive collector's piece and an excellent example of Qing Dynasty smoking paraphernalia.

Length: 57.5 cm.

Good condition with an attractive untouched patina. Minor age-related wear and natural cracking to the ivory terminals as expected. The ceramic bowl is original and bears its maker's seal.
